Milefortlet 9, Skinburness

The Roman fort at Skinburness sits quietly on the Solway Firth's mudflats, about three miles from Wigton - a place most people drive straight past without knowing it exists. What you're looking at are the remains of Milefortlet 9, a small auxiliary fort built around AD 130 as part of the Hadrian's Wall defensive system. The actual ruins are modest - low stone walls, a ditch, the ghost of what was once a functioning military outpost. The real draw is the location itself. Standing here, you're literally on the edge of Roman Britain, looking across the Firth towards Scotland. On a clear day it's properly atmospheric.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, though you'll need to bring your own interpretation - there's no visitor centre or signage to speak of. The site is free to access, and you can wander around as long as the tide and weather permit. Allow an hour, give or take. The mudflats can be treacherous, so check conditions before you go and wear decent boots. It's not a place for young kids who'll want facilities and clear paths - this is raw archaeology, not sanitised heritage.

If you're based at Solway Holiday Park or Stanwix Park Holiday Centre just down the road, this makes a proper detour for a morning walk. Pair it with the wider Hadrian's Wall trail if you want proper context. Quirky and genuinely Roman, even if the remains themselves are fragmentary.
