Wigton

Railway enthusiasts might be surprised to learn this modest Cumberland market town once had three separate railway stations. These days, Wigton moves at a gentler pace, with its Georgian buildings lining the high street telling stories of its agricultural heyday. The town sits in remarkably flat countryside, quite different from the dramatic Lake District peaks just twenty miles south.

St Paul's provides a focal point for the town centre, though the real draw here is Wigton's position as a gateway to the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Those sweeping mudflats and salt marshes stretch for miles, creating some of the most unusual coastal scenery in northern England. It's a proper contrast to the bustling Cumbrian tourist trails.

Just a few miles northwest, the Silloth Miniature Railway offers an unexpectedly delightful ride through this surprisingly varied landscape. The line runs to Silloth-on-Solway, where vast sandy beaches meet the Solway Firth. Grune Point Nature Reserve rewards walkers with excellent birdwatching - the mudflats here attract thousands of migrating waders.

For something completely different, Big Fella gallery showcases local artists, while the archaeological remains at Milefortlet 9, Skinburness hint at Roman occupation along this once-strategic coastline. The views from Starry Hill take in the Scottish hills across the firth on clear days.

Wigton lies about fifteen miles from Carlisle, easily reached by car via the A595. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense - you're close enough to explore the Lake District's northern reaches while having this quieter corner of Cumberland as your base. The Solway Coast feels wonderfully undiscovered compared to the honeypot destinations further south.
