Millfield Spinney

A proper woodland walk without the crowds - that's what Millfield Spinney offers if you're staying around Oakham. It's a small forest reserve, the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan around, with gentle paths threading through native trees and open spaces where you might spot deer or buzzards if you're lucky.

The spinney itself isn't vast - you can cover the main routes in under an hour - but it's exactly right if you've got restless kids or want to stretch your legs between caravan days. The woodland floor changes with the seasons: springtime brings a decent show of bluebells, autumn turns everything gold and copper. There's something quite meditative about it, especially mid-week when you'll likely have the paths to yourself.

If you're based at Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park just down the road, this makes for a low-effort morning before heading into Oakham town itself. Dog walkers get the most obvious use out of it - no lead required in most areas - though it's equally good for anyone wanting twenty minutes or an hour of quiet woodland without driving far. No facilities to speak of, so come prepared with waterproofs if the forecast looks dodgy. The paths can get boggy after rain.

Free to access, naturally. Worth building into a day rather than planning a trip specifically around it, but if you're in Rutland for a caravan holiday, it's a proper tonic when you need some green space and fresh air.
