Moel Smytho

Standing at 735 metres, this modest peak offers surprisingly good views across Snowdonia without the crowds that mob its famous neighbours. The summit sits just west of Caernarfon, making it a proper alternative for walkers who fancy something a bit different from the usual Snowdon slog.

Most people approach from the north via forestry tracks, though the going can get boggy lower down - decent boots essential. The climb takes about two hours up, maybe ninety minutes back, and while it's not technically challenging, there are some steep sections that'll get the heart pumping.

Reaching the top, you'll understand why locals rate this one. Clear days reveal Anglesey stretching out to the northwest, while Snowdon dominates the eastern horizon. It's particularly lovely in autumn when the bracken turns golden.

Families with older children (say ten plus) will manage fine, though younger ones might struggle with the distance. Serious walkers often use Moel Smytho as a warm-up before tackling bigger peaks, or combine it with neighbouring hills for a longer day out.

Bryn Gloch Caravan & Camping Park sits less than a mile away, making this an easy morning expedition if you're staying nearby. The other parks around Llanberis are all within striking distance too. Just check the weather forecast - this peak catches the worst of any incoming Atlantic storms.
