Moel Tryfan

Standing just north of Caernarfon, this modest hill offers surprisingly rewarding views for relatively little effort. At 482 metres, Moel Tryfan won't test seasoned walkers, but it's a proper little workout that'll get the heart pumping without requiring crampons or a packed lunch.

Climbing through mixed woodland and open moorland, you'll reach a summit that delivers cracking panoramic views across the Menai Strait to Anglesey. On clear days, the Welsh coast stretches out beautifully, with Caernarfon Castle visible below - though the industrial bits around the town are less inspiring.

Families with older children will find this a good introduction to proper hill walking. The route's well-defined and not technically challenging, though it's definitely more substantial than a Sunday stroll. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top taking photos.

What makes this walk particularly appealing is its accessibility from several nearby holiday parks. Bryn Gloch Caravan & Camping Park sits closest at just 1.5 miles away, while Glan Gwna Holiday Park offers a slightly more developed base at under four miles distance. It's the sort of hill that rewards you with proper mountain views without the full-day commitment of Snowdon's bigger peaks.
