Moel Ty-gwyn

The walk up Moel Ty-gwyn isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. From Pwllheli, you're looking at a proper little climb through moorland and rough grass - maybe forty minutes to the summit if you're moving at a decent pace. The peak itself sits at 564 metres, which doesn't sound massive until you're actually ascending it and the Lleyn Peninsula spreads out beneath you in all directions.

What you get at the top is genuinely worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see right across to Bardsey Island and the coastal curve towards Abersoch. The views inland sweep across moorland and farms, and if the light's right in late afternoon, it's rather special. Walkers will find this absolutely their sort of thing - straightforward enough for anyone moderately fit, but with real summit satisfaction at the end.

Families with older kids can manage it easily. Younger ones might find the final push tedious, though the goal of reaching the cairn usually spurs them on. Allow a couple of hours there and back, and pick a dry day - the moorland gets boggy after rain and the path's not much to speak of.

If you're camping locally at Gyrn Ddu or Llwyn Ffynnon, this makes a cracking half-day out from base camp. It's the sort of walk that clears your head properly without eating into precious park time.
