Mynydd Nefyn

The walk up Mynydd Nefyn takes you straight into proper Welsh hill country, rising just over 560 metres with views that stretch across Cardigan Bay on a clear day. It's not a slog - the climb is steady rather than brutal, and the path from Pwllheli is well-worn enough that you won't lose your way. At the top there's an Iron Age fort, though honestly the ramparts are subtle; what matters more is standing up there watching the light change across the water and the Llŷn Peninsula falling away behind you.

This one's for walkers who want something genuine without needing a full-day expedition. Families with kids aged eight upwards will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the last stretch tedious. History buffs get a kick out of the fort itself, even if it requires a bit of imagination to picture the settlement that once stood here. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're moving steadily, longer if you're the type to sit about and take photographs.

It works brilliantly as a half-day outing from any of the local parks - Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts and Away From It All are close enough that you could knock this out before lunch. The weather matters here; mist rolls in quickly, and on a foggy day you're mostly walking through cloud. Time it for morning when the Bay's properly lit up, or late afternoon if you want those long shadows.
