Mogshade Hill

Rolling heather and gorse stretch endlessly from the summit of this modest New Forest peak, offering surprisingly far-reaching views across Hampshire and into Dorset on clear days. The climb itself is gentle enough for most walkers - a steady pull through bracken and scattered birch trees that shouldn't trouble anyone with reasonable fitness.

Families with older children will find this a proper adventure without the drama of bigger hills. The ponies that graze these slopes add to the appeal, though give them plenty of space. Dog walkers love the freedom here, but keep leads handy during foaling season.

What strikes you most is the sense of space. From the top, the New Forest spreads out like a green carpet punctuated by the occasional village. On summer evenings, when the heather blooms purple and the light turns golden, it's genuinely lovely up here.

Allow two hours for the round trip from Lyndhurst, including time to soak up those views. The path can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are wise. Unlike some forest walks, this one rewards you with a real sense of achievement - not bad for a hill that barely registers on serious hiking maps. Worth combining with a stay at nearby Hollands Wood or Ocknell campsites for a proper New Forest weekend.
