Acres Down South

Rolling heathland stretches as far as you can see from this elevated spot in the New Forest, with gorse-covered hills giving way to distant woodland. The viewpoint sits on open common land where New Forest ponies graze freely, their bells tinkling as they wander between the heather. From here, the landscape unfolds in gentle waves of purple and gold, particularly stunning during late summer when the heather's in full bloom.

Walkers will love this place - it's easily reached on foot from several directions, including routes from nearby Lyndhurst. The open aspect means you get proper big-sky views without the claustrophobic feel of some forest viewpoints. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of uphill walking will find it rewarding, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain.

What makes Acres Down South special is its sense of wildness. Unlike some New Forest spots that feel managed to death, this area retains that proper ancient common feel.
