Millyford Bridge Inclosure

You'll find Millyford Bridge tucked away in the heart of the New Forest, about a mile and a half from Lyndhurst. It's a proper slice of forest history - an old stone bridge crossing the Lymington River, surrounded by ancient woodland and the kind of quiet that makes you forget there's a car park at Lyndhurst at all.

The bridge itself is modest, nothing showy, but that's rather the point. This is New Forest architecture stripped back to basics - built to serve the working forest, not to impress. The surrounding inclosure (that's the fenced woodland, for those less familiar with New Forest terminology) is what draws people here. Walkers love it because the paths are straightforward without being boring, and you get genuine forest atmosphere without the crowds you'd find at some of the more famous spots.

It works best as part of a longer New Forest walk rather than a destination in itself. Most people allow thirty minutes to an hour, depending on whether you're just admiring the bridge or wandering the woodland paths. There's no charge, no facilities, no visitor centre nonsense. Free access, anytime.

If you're camping at any of the nearby sites - Ocknell, Long Meadow, or Black Knowl are all within three miles - Millyford makes an excellent morning or afternoon detour. History enthusiasts will appreciate the glimpse of how the forest was managed centuries ago. Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet and uneventful after ten minutes, but serious walkers and photographers will find it worth the trip.
