Mordington Old Church

The ruins of Mordington Old Church stand in isolated countryside a few miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, and they're genuinely worth a detour if you're exploring this part of the Scottish Borders. What remains is mainly the stone walls and a few arched windows - not dramatic, but there's something rather affecting about the quietness of the place. You're standing in what was clearly a substantial medieval building, now just a shell surrounded by moorland.

It's the sort of spot that works brilliantly for walkers heading between Berwick and the surrounding parks like Haven Berwick Holiday Centre or Ord House Country Park. You can't spend more than twenty minutes looking round, but it's the kind of diversion that makes a proper afternoon walk feel like you've actually discovered something rather than just trudged about. History types will appreciate the architecture; kids will get bored fairly quickly unless they're into climbing on old stones.

Access appears to be free and open at all times - there's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared for weather. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see across to Scotland from the surrounding land. It's not a destination in itself, but combined with a stay at one of the caravan parks near Berwick and a walk across the local countryside, it's exactly the kind of authentic historical site that makes a seaside holiday feel less touristy. Go with low expectations and you'll enjoy it more.
