Union Bridge

The first suspension bridge in the world to use iron chains instead of cables - that's what you're looking at when you cross Union Bridge between England and Scotland near Berwick-upon-Tweed. Built in 1820, it's a proper piece of engineering history, a slender span of cast iron that still carries foot traffic across the River Tweed today.

Walking it is the thing. The views upstream and down are lovely, and there's something satisfying about standing mid-river on something this old, feeling the structure beneath your feet. It's a short crossing - maybe five minutes on foot - so don't expect a lengthy expedition, but it's absolutely worth the minor detour if you're staying at Chainbridge Touring Caravan Site or any of the other parks clustered around Berwick.

Historians will find it genuinely interesting; families will get a kick out of saying they've walked between two countries on a chain bridge. Kids under ten might find the actual experience a bit anticlimactic once they've crossed it, though the photo opportunity never disappoints.

Access appears free and unrestricted, though the approach paths could be muddy depending on weather. There's no visitor centre or facilities on site, so come prepared. The bridge sits just south of Berwick itself, making it an easy slot into any tour of the Borders. Pair it with a walk along the river or a visit to Berwick's walls if you've got an hour to spare. Best visited in decent light and dry conditions - the iron can be slippery when wet.
