Berwick-upon-Tweed

Three nations converge here in ways that still feel slightly surreal. Standing on Berwick's medieval walls, you can see into Scotland while technically being in England - though the locals will remind you this place changed hands thirteen times over the centuries. The River Tweed curves lazily toward the North Sea, creating a natural border that's more suggestion than barrier.

Those Elizabethan ramparts are the real star. Walking the complete circuit takes about an hour and gives you proper views over the red-tiled rooftops toward the Cheviot Hills. The three bridges spanning the Tweed tell their own story - from the 15th-century Old Bridge to the soaring Royal Border Bridge that carries the East Coast Main Line north.

Venture beyond the walls and the countryside opens up into rolling hills dotted with ancient sites. Witches Knowe offers decent views without much effort, while the curious ruins at Paxton Brick & Tile Works hint at the area's industrial past. Further afield, spots like Ayton Hill and Chester Hill provide more challenging walks with rewarding panoramas.

Getting here means either the A1 (watch for speed cameras through the villages) or the railway from Edinburgh or Newcastle. The town centre is compact enough to explore on foot, though you'll want wheels for the surrounding hills and hidden valleys.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for evening strolls along the quayside, yet positioned to explore both the English Borders and southern Scotland. The area between Coldstream and the coast offers some of the most unspoiled countryside in northern England, with medieval churches like St Cuthbert's and viewpoints such as Foulden Jubilee providing glimpses into a landscape that's remained largely unchanged for centuries.
