Mosshead Hill

The walk up Mosshead Hill rewards you with proper views across the borderlands - that tussocky moorland sort of terrain where you're acutely aware you're between England and Scotland. It's not a dramatic peak, more of a steady climb from near Lockerbie that takes the better part of an hour depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. On a clear day the visibility stretches impressively; on a grey one it feels appropriately wild and windswept.

This is walker territory, full stop. The kind of outing that appeals to people who enjoy moving through landscape rather than ticking off viewpoints. Children will manage it fine if they're accustomed to hills, though there's nothing particularly thrilling at the summit - no café, no facilities, just the satisfaction of having climbed something.

It works brilliantly as part of a broader Dumfries & Galloway park holiday. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Halleaths, Cressfield, or Hoddom Castle are all within striking distance - you can knit together a few half-day walks without driving everywhere. The terrain around here is genuinely underrated; folk tend to rush past towards Mull or Skye and miss the gentler, rollier walking on your doorstep.

Free to access, naturally. Allow a couple of hours including the climb and a breather at the top. Best attempted when the ground isn't waterlogged - these hills drain poorly after rain - and on a day when visibility is reasonable, otherwise you'll just be trudging through mist with no reward.
