Mother Rumbles

Walking through this ancient woodland feels like stepping into a Brothers Grimm tale, minus the happy ending. Mother Rumbles is one of Norfolk's more atmospheric forests, where gnarled oaks and towering pines create a proper canopy that blocks out most daylight even on sunny days. The name alone should give you a clue about its character - this isn't your typical family-friendly woodland stroll.

Dog walkers and serious hikers will appreciate the network of muddy paths that wind through dense undergrowth, though families with young children might find it a bit too wild and unstructured. There's something genuinely eerie about the place that older kids will either love or find completely terrifying. The silence here is almost complete, broken only by the occasional crack of a branch or rustle in the bushes.

Located just east of King's Lynn, it's easily accessible from several holiday parks including Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Diglea Holiday Park. Allow at least an hour to explore properly, though you could easily spend a morning here if you're into wildlife spotting or just want to escape the crowds. Best visited on a crisp autumn day when the atmosphere is at its most dramatic, though summer visits offer better visibility through the trees.
