Motney Hill

You won't find Motney Hill on many tourist maps, which is rather the point. It's a modest chalk rise near Rochester that gives decent views across the Medway Valley and the marshlands beyond - nothing spectacular, but genuine. On a clear day you can pick out the wider Kent landscape rolling away to the south.

The walk up takes about fifteen minutes from the nearest approach, and it's steep enough to feel like proper exercise without being punishing. The summit itself is bare and windswept, which means the views aren't obscured by trees, though it also means there's nowhere to shelter if the weather turns. Bring a coat.

This one works best for walkers rather than families after a quick Instagram shot. History buffs might appreciate its position in the old Medway defences, though there's not much to see up there to prove it. You'll spend maybe half an hour total, including the climb and a few moments catching your breath at the top.

It's a useful addition to a longer walk rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Oak View Holiday Park nearby, or anywhere around Rochester, it's worth knocking off as part of a morning's ramble through the area. Pair it with a proper lunch in Rochester itself rather than expecting the summit to reward you with a picnic spot. Decent enough on a good day, but don't rearrange your schedule for it.
