Much Wenlock Museum

The museum sits right in Much Wenlock's high street, a modest Victorian building that punches above its weight. Inside, you'll find displays covering the town's Roman past - there was a significant settlement here - alongside Saxon artefacts and material from the medieval priory that still dominates the skyline. The collection isn't enormous, but it's genuinely interesting stuff, arranged with obvious care by people who actually know their subject.

This is primarily for history enthusiasts rather than a rainy-day distraction. You'll get more from it if you're already keen on Roman Britain or medieval Shropshire, though the local social history sections have real charm - old photographs, period domestic objects, the kind of thing that brings a market town's past alive. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're reading everything thoroughly.

Best visited as part of a wider exploration of Much Wenlock itself. The priory ruins are superb and free to wander, the town has proper character, and several of the nearby holiday parks - Sytche Caravan & Camping Park is practically on the doorstep, whilst Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp offers something different if you fancy quieter pitches - make good bases for exploring the Shropshire landscape. Opening hours are limited and seasonal, so check before you go. Admission is free, which feels fair given the size, though donations are accepted. Winter months see reduced hours, so plan accordingly if you're visiting October through April.
