Mungrisdale Common

Mungrisdale Common isn't a mountain you climb for the view from the top - it's a fell walk that rewards you with something different. This grassy, rolling summit sits north-east of Keswick, offering proper Lake District fell walking without the crowds you'd get on Catbells or Helvellyn. The ascent is steady rather than brutal, taking most people around two hours up from the valley floor, and the moorland terrain means you're often above the clouds even when Keswick is grey.

What makes it worth the effort is the isolation. You won't queue for a summit selfie here. The views stretch across to Blencathra and down into Mosedale, and on a clear day you can see right across the northern fells. The walk suits experienced hikers more than families with young kids - it's not technical, but it demands decent fitness and proper boots. There's no cafes or facilities at the top, so bring water and a packed lunch.

If you're camped at Threlkeld Hall Caravan Park or Ewe Love Camping Pods - both within spitting distance - this walk makes a natural morning or afternoon adventure. It pairs well with exploring the quieter end of Derwentwater or tackling Blencathra from the other side. Allow a full half-day, longer if you want to linger. The fell is open year-round and completely free to access, which is proper fell walking as it should be.
