Bowscale Fell

Standing at 702 metres, this modest Lakeland fell delivers far more punch than its relatively gentle height suggests. The walk up from Bowscale Tarn car park takes about 90 minutes through proper fell country - bracken-covered slopes that turn golden in autumn and rough grass that's ankle-deep in places.

Families with older children will find the route manageable, though it's definitely not pushchair territory. The path can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. What makes Bowscale Fell special is the view from the top - you get a cracking panorama across to Blencathra and the Northern Fells without the crowds that plague Helvellyn.

The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - just a small cairn on grassy moorland. But seasoned fell walkers know it's the journey that counts, and this one takes you through some lovely wild country that feels properly remote despite being just a few miles from Keswick.

It pairs well with a stay at nearby holiday parks like Threlkeld Hall Caravan Park or Carrock Glamping Pods, both within easy reach for an early morning start. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, and pick a clear day - the views are the whole point here. Weather can change quickly, so pack layers even in summer.
