The Museum of Eton Life sits right on the Eton College campus, just across the Thames from Windsor. It's a small affair - don't expect grand galleries or crowds - but it tells the story of what it's actually like to be an Eton boy, from the 15th century onwards. You'll see uniforms, photographs, personal belongings, and get a sense of the rituals and traditions that have shaped generations of pupils. The museum gives proper insight into public school life, which is either fascinating or slightly odd depending on your view of the place.

It works well for history types and anyone curious about British education, though younger children might find it a bit dry. Teenagers studying social history or considering boarding schools themselves will get more from it. The location is the real draw - you're right on the College grounds, so you can wander the riverside afterwards and soak up the atmosphere. It's the sort of thing you'd do as part of a larger Windsor day rather than a dedicated trip.

If you're staying at Queens Acre or Amerden, both within easy driving distance, it's worth an hour or so. Check ahead for opening hours and admission costs, as these aren't always straightforward for college-affiliated museums. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring school visitors and it gets a bit chaotic. The walk along the Thames afterwards is the real bonus.
