Myddelton Grange

A stone church sitting quietly on the edge of Ilkley, Myddelton Grange is one of those places you could walk past a dozen times without noticing - which is precisely why it's worth making the effort to actually stop. Built in the 1880s, it's a proper example of Victorian ecclesiastical architecture, all solid Yorkshire stone and purposeful design, lacking the frilly excess you might expect from its era.

The interior is where the real interest lies. The woodwork is genuinely fine - carved pews and a decent roof are the sort of details that reward a quiet ten minutes with a coffee afterwards. It's not showy. There's no gift shop, no audio guide, no fake drama. Just a working church that's been going about its business for well over a century.

This is for walkers and local history types rather than casual day-trippers. The churchyard itself is pleasant without being spectacular. Allow twenty minutes inside if you're genuinely interested in the stonework and fittings, though you could be through in five if you're just passing. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends.

It works well if you're camping at Olicana Park, just a couple of miles down the road, or staying anywhere around Ilkley for a few nights. Pair it with a walk across the moors - you're proper moorland country here - and it slots into a day nicely rather than being a destination in itself. The town of Ilkley itself has enough going on to make it a worthwhile base, particularly if you're walking the Ilkley Moor circuit.
