Myers Head Lead Mine

The rusted machinery and crumbling stone workings scattered across Myers Head tell the story of Cumbria's industrial backbone. This abandoned lead mine sits in the fells above Penrith, where miners clawed out ore from the 1600s right through to the early 20th century. What you'll find now is more atmospheric than dramatic - broken wheels, collapsed shafts, and scattered rubble that rewards a bit of poking about but won't fill more than an hour of your time.

It's the sort of place that appeals to industrial history obsessives and walkers who enjoy a bit of exploration beyond the manicured trails. The site itself is free to wander, though there's no visitor infrastructure whatsoever - no café, no information boards, not even a car park in the conventional sense. You'll need proper footwear and the ability to read a map, as signposting is minimal. The landscape around it is genuinely lovely though, and combining this with a longer walk across the fells makes it worth the effort.

If you're camped at Sykeside or Crossgate, both a mile or so away, this makes a decent half-day option. Weather dependent, obviously - rain turns the site into a muddy slog and the views disappear. For families with young kids, it's probably more hassle than reward. But if you're into industrial archaeology or need a break from the Lake District's busier attractions, Myers Head scratches that itch properly.
