Mynydd Egryn Circle Cairn

You're looking at a Bronze Age circle cairn that sits on the slopes of Mynydd Egryn, above Barmouth in Gwynedd. It's not flashy - just a ring of stones marking what was probably a burial site or ceremonial gathering place thousands of years ago. The real appeal is the walk to get there and what you see once you've climbed up.

This is absolutely worth doing if you're staying at any of the caravan parks around Barmouth - Hendre Mynach or Lyons Sunnysands are both close enough that you could knock it out in an afternoon. The hike itself takes a couple of hours depending on your fitness and which path you take from the village. It's not trivial - you're climbing properly - but the views over Cardigan Bay make it worthwhile. On a clear day you can see right across to the Llŷn Peninsula.

The site itself? Honest assessment: it's modest. You get a circle of stones and that's the lot, but there's something affecting about standing at a place where people gathered four thousand years ago. History types will find it genuinely interesting, families with younger kids might find the hike more rewarding than the destination itself. It's free, obviously - it's just a hillside - and there's no facilities whatsoever, so bring water and don't expect anything when you arrive except grass and stones.

Combine it with Shell Island or the Rhaeadr Nantcol waterfalls if you want to make a proper day of exploring the area. The Barmouth coastal stretch has plenty going on, so this works well as a morning's work before heading elsewhere.
