Mynydd Garth

Standing at 458 metres, this modest hill above Caersws offers surprisingly far-reaching views across the Severn Valley for relatively little effort. The climb takes about 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following a well-trodden path through sheep pasture and scattered woodland.

From the grassy summit, you'll see the Cambrian Mountains stretching south and the distinctive outline of Plynlimon to the west. It's not spectacular - this isn't Snowdon - but there's something proper satisfying about reaching any Welsh peak, however humble. The view takes in a good chunk of mid-Wales, with the railway line to Machynlleth visible snaking through the valley below.

Walkers and families with older children will find this a decent morning out. The path can get muddy after rain, so proper boots are essential. Allow two hours round trip, including time to appreciate the view and perhaps spot a red kite or two circling overhead.

It's free, always open, and gives you bragging rights about 'bagging' a Welsh peak.
