National Trust - Bibury

The village itself is the attraction here. Arlington Row - that's the one you've seen on a thousand postcards - consists of a dozen honey-coloured cottages running alongside the Coln, their reflections caught in the water like a painting that refuses to fade. Built in the 14th century as a wool store, then converted to weavers' cottages, they're now National Trust property and genuinely as lovely as the hype suggests.

You can walk straight through. There's no entrance fee, no ticketing office, just you and the river and probably thirty other people all trying to photograph the same angle. Go early - before 10am if you can manage it - or you're shooting around a crowd. The whole village is walkable in an hour, though you could easily spend longer pottering about. There's a trout farm if you fancy something interactive, and the Swan Hotel does a decent lunch.

Historically minded types will find enough to occupy an afternoon. The church is worth a look, and the Bridge House - all Tudor beams and wonky floors - tells you something about medieval commerce. Families with younger children might find it a bit thin on activities after the initial "ooh, pretty" moment, though the riverside walk is gentle enough.

From Northleach it's barely ten minutes' drive. If you're based at Great Farm or Mayfield Park nearby, it's an easy morning or afternoon slot rather than a full day commitment. Honestly? It lives up to the postcard. Don't skip it.
