National Trust - Claremont Landscape Garden

The eighteenth-century landscape garden at Claremont, just outside Cobham, is one of those places that stops you dead. Designed by William Kent and later refined by Capability Brown, it's a masterclass in how to reshape the English countryside without it looking forced. Rolling lawns sweep down to an artificial lake, there's a proper grotto tucked away in the woods, and a Chinese bridge that's genuinely rather beautiful.

You're paying National Trust membership or an entry fee to wander the grounds - allow a solid two hours if you want to explore properly, longer if you're the type to sit by the water and sketch. The garden itself is free to walk around, though the house tours cost extra. History buffs will lose themselves here; the layers of design philosophy are genuinely interesting if you care about that sort of thing. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on activities after the first lake circuit, though there's enough space that a proper run-around won't bother anyone.

From Polyapes Scout Campsite or Walton on Thames just a couple of miles away, it's an easy morning trip. If you're based at Chessington World of Adventures Resort and after something quieter, this offers proper respite - no queues, no screaming, just gardens that were old when your great-grandparents were young. Go midweek if you can. Weekends pull the crowds.
