National Trust - Devil's Dyke

The massive chalk valley cutting through the South Downs near Henfield is one of those landscapes that stops you dead. Devil's Dyke is a National Trust nature reserve, and what you're looking at is a geological scar - a valley carved by meltwater at the end of the last ice age, now a 650-acre patchwork of grassland, scrub, and woodland that genuinely takes your breath away.

Walkers will have a field day here. The main path sweeps along the ridge with views that stretch for miles across the weald, and there's enough terrain to keep you occupied for anything from a brisk hour to a full afternoon. The mix of chalk downland and woodland means it's genuinely interesting underfoot - not just a slog up and down. The grassland supports rare plants and butterflies, so if you're even mildly into wildlife, there's real stuff to spot.

Families with older kids will manage fine, though the steep sections might exhaust younger legs. On a clear day the vistas make the effort worthwhile. On a grey day it's still atmospheric, just less Instagram-friendly.

The site is free and open year-round. It sits brilliantly for a park holiday - Foot of the Downs and Downsview Park are both within a couple of miles, putting you in walking distance of proper downland without needing to drive every time. Spring's best for wildflowers, but autumn light is genuinely stunning if you can time it right.
