National Trust - Trengwainton Garden

Trengwainton is one of those National Trust gardens where you round a corner and suddenly the whole thing clicks into place. Walled Victorian kitchen gardens, rhododendrons that look like they've been painted on, and specimen trees that have clearly been here since your grandparents were young. The garden sits a few miles outside Newmill in West Cornwall, and it's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying anywhere in the area.

What makes it different from the usual stately home gardens is that there's actual space to breathe. The walled garden is the showpiece - all proper Victorian planning with neat rows of fruit and veg alongside the ornamental bits. Spring and early summer are when the azaleas and rhododendrons look their best, but honestly there's colour through most of the year if you know where to look.

Historically-minded visitors will appreciate the Georgian farmhouse heritage, though the garden itself is the real draw rather than the building. Families can manage it in an hour or two without feeling rushed, and there's enough interest for keen gardeners to spend half a day examining planting schemes and specimen shrubs.

If you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Roselands or St. Ives Holiday Village are reasonably close - Trengwainton makes a solid morning out. You'll want to check opening hours and admission fees before you go, as National Trust properties vary. The walk up from the car park is gentle enough, though it's not flat. Proper job if the weather's on your side.
