Near Belt Hill

The walk up to Belt Hill proper rewards you with the kind of fell views that make you understand why people move to the Lakes and never leave. It's a modest peak by Lakeland standards - nothing requiring technical climbing or serious scrambling - but the approach from Penrith direction has character, rolling through rough moorland with genuine isolation despite being minutes from town.

What you get is a proper fell-top experience without the three-hour slog. The summit offers generous views across to higher fells and down towards Ullswater, which sits gleaming in the distance like someone's left the tap running. On a clear day you can pick out the bigger mountains; on a grey one you get that brooding, atmospheric thing the Lakes do brilliantly. Walkers wanting something achievable between breakfast and lunch will find their sweet spot here.

The best time is early morning or late afternoon when the light does something special with the fells. Allow two to three hours for a comfortable round-trip depending on your pace and how long you stand about gawping. No facilities up there, obviously, so bring water and something sensible for the wind.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotting the area - Waterfoot's your nearest at under a mile away - Belt Hill makes a cracking leg-stretcher without monopolising your day. Pair it with a wander around Penrith town itself or push on to bigger walks in the surrounding fells. Not flashy, but genuinely worth doing.
