Neolithic ring ditch

A low earthwork on the Suffolk landscape east of Bury, this Neolithic ring ditch is the sort of thing you'd walk straight past if you didn't know what you were looking at. But that's precisely what makes it worth stopping for. It's a circular bank and ditch system dating back around 5,000 years, and standing here you're looking at something people gathered around when Britain was barely populated at all.

There's not much to do in the active sense - it's an archaeological site, not a visitor centre. You walk around it, get a sense of the scale, maybe take a photo. The real draw is the thinking it provokes. Who used this? Was it ceremonial, defensive, or something else entirely? The answers aren't clear, and that's oddly compelling.

This is strictly for archaeology enthusiasts and curious walkers, not a family day-out activity. You'll need ten minutes, maybe twenty if you're properly interested. Free to visit as it's an open archaeological site - just respect the earthworks and don't go trampling the banks.

It fits nicely into a broader East Anglian circuit. Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park sits just half a mile away, making it an effortless addition to a park-based holiday. West Stow Pods is only a mile further and worth considering for better facilities. Pair it with other Bronze Age and Iron Age sites in the area for a proper archaeology weekend.
