New Plantation

Ancient woodland doesn't get more accessible than New Plantation, a proper slice of old-growth forest sitting just outside Northampton where you can actually wander without needing a map or paying an entry fee. The trees here are genuinely old - oak, ash, and beech that have been standing for centuries - and in autumn the floor turns into a carpet of rust and gold that's worth the drive alone.

It's the kind of place where walkers genuinely get their money's worth. You're looking at a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice, though you can pop in for a quick thirty-minute stroll if time's tight. The paths are fairly well-trodden, which means they're muddy in winter but manageable year-round. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, and there's enough quiet here that you'll actually hear birds instead of traffic from the A43.

Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers - it's not a playground, and younger ones tire of "just trees" after about twenty minutes. But if you're camping at Moon Valley Glamping Retreat just four miles away, you've got an excellent spot for a morning walk before heading back for breakfast. It breaks up the holiday nicely alongside whatever else Northamptonshire throws at you.
