Newark Castle

The ruins sprawl across a grassy knoll just outside Leven, commanding views over the Fife coastline. Newark Castle dates back to the 15th century, though what remains now is largely the work of later centuries - enough stonework to give you a genuine sense of medieval defensive architecture, but not so intact that you'll spend hours picking through every corner.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow walk around the perimeter. The castle sits on a promontory with decent vistas across the Firth of Forth, and on a clear day you can make out the Kingdom of Fife spreading out below. The structure itself tells the story of Scottish border defence and political power - not as flashy as some castles, but genuine in its bones.

Walkers using the nearby caravan parks - particularly those at St Monans, Elie, or Silverdyke - will find this a manageable detour. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're thorough about exploring the ruins and soaking in the views. History enthusiasts will get more from it than young children, though the open space and scrambling opportunities keep kids occupied. The coastal setting makes it feel less like a museum piece and more like an actual place people once lived and fought over.

Access appears to be free and available year-round, though it's always worth checking locally in Leven before making the trip. Best visited in decent weather when the views earn their keep.
