Newlyn Filmhouse

The Newlyn Filmhouse sits in what feels like proper working Cornwall - no twee postcards here, just a real Cornish fishing village where locals actually live. It's a community cinema, the sort of place that shows the films cinemas in bigger towns have already forgotten about, mixed in with live theatre, music events, and the odd bit of local documentary.

Inside, it's intimate without being cramped. You're watching a film surrounded by people who've chosen to be there rather than scrolling at home, which changes the whole atmosphere. The programme shifts regularly, so there's no point me listing specific films here, but it tends toward the intelligent end of things - arthouse, international, classics - alongside family screenings that actually appeal to adults too.

This works brilliantly if you're camped at Roselands or Foxglove Field, both within striking distance. You could spend an afternoon pottering around Bosulval's working harbour, grab something to eat, then head to an evening showing. It's the sort of night out that feels properly local rather than touristy, which is rare in Cornwall these days.

Check their website before you go - hours and programmes change, and booking ahead is worth doing. It's free to look around the foyer, but tickets for films and events cost a few quid, which seems fair for what you get. Allow a couple of hours if you're making an evening of it.
