Newpool Coppice

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more atmospheric than this slice of old England just outside Malvern. I found myself completely absorbed wandering the winding paths through Newpool Coppice, where centuries-old oak and hazel create a proper canopy overhead. The name gives away its history - this was once managed coppice woodland, and you can still spot the evidence in the multi-stemmed trees that were regularly cut for charcoal and building materials.

Dog walkers and families looking for a gentle ramble will find this spot absolutely lovely. The paths are well-defined but not overly manicured, giving it that wild feel without the worry of getting properly lost. My kids spent ages poking about in the undergrowth and building dens from fallen branches. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, though any season offers something - the autumn colours are particularly good.

From holiday parks like Malvern Hills Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Blackmore Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's an easy drive for an afternoon escape. You could easily combine it with a proper hike up the Malvern Hills themselves, though honestly, some days a quiet wander through ancient trees beats a sweaty climb any day. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly.
