Normandy Lagoon

Between Freshwater and the western tip of the Isle of Wight, this crescent-shaped freshwater lagoon sits just behind the shingle ridge that separates it from the sea. It's a proper wildlife haven - I counted at least a dozen species during my morning visit, including little egrets picking their way through the shallows and reed warblers chattering from the margins.

Birdwatchers will have a field day here, especially during spring and autumn migrations when the lagoon acts as a vital stopover. The circular walk around the perimeter takes about forty minutes at a gentle pace, with decent views across to the mainland from the seaward side. Families with young children might find it a bit boggy underfoot after rain, and there are no facilities to speak of.

What makes Normandy Lagoon special is its position between two very different landscapes - the dramatic chalk cliffs of the western Wight and the quieter, more pastoral interior. It's not dramatic like some of the island's coastal walks, but there's something deeply peaceful about watching the water ripple in the breeze.

Staying at nearby Shorefield Country Park or Camp Wight? This makes a lovely early morning detour before the crowds hit the main tourist spots. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy drama - this is gentle, contemplative countryside at its best.
