North Beach

The seafront at Aberystwyth stretches north in a long, sandy sweep that catches proper Atlantic light on clear days. North Beach is where locals actually go when they want space - quieter than the main promenade, backed by grass dunes rather than amusement arcades, and genuinely free to access. You'll find firm sand here, the kind that doesn't shift under your feet, running for miles up the coast toward Clarach Bay.

It's a straightforward seaside experience. Paddling, sandcastle-building, a long walk if the mood takes you. The water's cold even in summer - this is the Welsh coast after all - but that doesn't stop families and swimmers during the holidays. The beach has proper character: old Victorian hotels watching from the promenade, the railway line running behind, mountains across the bay on days when the light's kind.

Walkers get the most from North Beach. The tide lets you walk south into the town centre or north for hours. Families with young kids will find safe, sheltered spots, though there's not much in the way of facilities - no lifeguards advertised, so check locally. Allow as much time as you need. It costs nothing and you can stay five minutes or five hours.

Base yourself at Aberystwyth Holiday Village or Clarach Bay Holiday Village if you're staying put - both within spitting distance. This works well as a half-day break from the town's attractions, or a proper long walk if you're here for the week. Don't expect ice cream vans and inflatables. This is a working beach where the sea does what it wants.
