North Pole Express

The North Pole Express is a working heritage railway that runs vintage steam and diesel trains through the Durham countryside - proper old-school stuff that actually gets you somewhere rather than just round and round a museum loop.

You climb aboard restored carriages that have actual history, and the journey takes you through decent countryside. The whole experience takes a couple of hours depending on the route, and it's the sort of thing that genuinely grips both kids and grown-ups. The volunteers running the place clearly know their stuff and aren't afraid to chat about the locomotives.

It's not free - you'll pay for your ticket - but it's reasonable value. Go on a quieter weekday if possible; weekends get rammed with families, which does take the edge off the experience. The site itself is small enough that you won't spend all day there, so it works well as part of a broader Durham trip rather than a standalone destination.
