Northmoor Park

The heathland around Northmoor Park is proper Dorset - open, windswept, and genuinely wild. It's a nature reserve that feels more like you've wandered into someone's very untidy back garden than a formal attraction, which is exactly why it works. You get wide views across the heath, gorse scrubland, and the kind of walking paths that make you feel like you're actually discovering something rather than following signage.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination where you stand in one spot and admire the view; it's about moving through the landscape, spotting birds and insects if you're patient enough. The paths aren't manicured, and that matters. Families with older kids who can manage a proper ramble will enjoy it far more than those after a quick photo stop. Bring decent boots.

The reserve sits just outside Wareham, which means you can easily pair this with time at one of the nearby caravan parks. West Holme Glamping is barely three miles away and highly rated, or Primrose Fields if you want a more traditional campsite setup. You could spend a full morning here and still have plenty of afternoon left for exploring Wareham itself or heading to other spots along the Purbeck.

It's free and open year-round, though winter and early spring are when the light is best. Allow two to three hours if you want to do it properly rather than dash through.
