Spetisbury Station Project

The railway enthusiasts round here have done something rather clever at Spetisbury Station. What was once a working Victorian halt on the old branch line between Wareham and West Bay has been restored by volunteers who clearly know their stuff. You'll find lovingly maintained period buildings, vintage signalling equipment, and enough railway heritage to keep track-spotters genuinely occupied for a couple of hours.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to people with a genuine interest in transport history rather than casual day-trippers. If your kids are into Thomas the Tank Engine, they might get a kick out of it, but don't expect theme park thrills. Adults who remember when branch lines were part of everyday life tend to find it deeply nostalgic.

The station sits in proper countryside just outside Wareham, making it an easy addition to a broader Dorset ramble. If you're staying at Dorset Glamping nearby, it's close enough for a morning visit without eating up half your day. The setting itself is lovely - rolling fields and that particular English tranquility that makes you forget why you needed a holiday in the first place.

I'd allow ninety minutes here at most, longer if you time it right and there's a knowledgeable volunteer about. They do tend to really know their material. Worth the detour if railways are your thing; skip it if you need more active entertainment.
