Nursery Wood

Walk into Nursery Wood and you're straight into proper woodland - the kind where the light filters through in stripes and the ground is soft underfoot year-round. It's a modest forest near Dalton-in-Furness, not vast, but it feels remote enough that you'll forget there's a town just down the road.

The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent tree cover, and it's the sort of place where you notice things - moss on stones, the smell after rain, birdsong actually cutting through the quiet. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. It works best as a gentle ramble rather than a destination in itself; expect an hour or two depending on how many side paths you explore.

Families with younger kids will get a decent hour out of it before boredom sets in, though older walkers tend to appreciate it more as part of a wider route. The ground can get boggy in winter, so timing matters. Spring and autumn are probably your sweet spot.

If you're based at Harbour Lights Campsite just up the coast - and it's a decent spot with a solid 4.8 rating - Nursery Wood works as a rainy-day option or a morning walk before heading to the beach. It's not revolutionary, but it's free, it's local, and it does exactly what a woodland should: gives you space and green. Worth a go if you're in the area, but don't reroute your holiday for it.
