Oak Covert

Walk into Oak Covert and you're immediately swallowed by a proper woodland - the kind where the canopy is thick enough to darken the afternoon even in summer. It's a forest that actually feels like a forest, not a manicured country estate with tree-lined paths.

There's not much infrastructure here, which is either its best feature or its worst, depending on what you want. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no picnic tables with signs telling you where to sit. Just trees, paths that meander through decent-sized oaks, and space to breathe. The soil underfoot is soft and often boggy, so wellies aren't a bad shout after rain.

This works best for walkers who want genuine woodland rather than a stroll - folks who'll actually explore rather than walk fifty metres and head back to the car. Families with kids aged eight plus will find something to do; younger ones might get restless without a clear trail or destination. If you're into fungi, birds, or just unpicking what a real British woodland looks like, you'll be in your element.

Close enough to Ludlow to tag on after a morning in town, and it sits well alongside the nearby holiday parks - Orchard Holiday Park is only four miles out, so you could base yourself there and use Oak Covert as a morning walk without fighting crowds. Allow a couple of hours minimum; more if you're actually looking at things.
