Oakham Level Crossing

The railway crossing at Oakham isn't flashy - just a functional bit of Victorian infrastructure where the old Midland Main Line cuts through town. But it's become something of a railway spotter's magnet, especially on heritage train days when steam engines roll through and actually stop the traffic. The level crossing itself is quite modest, the kind of thing you might drive over without thinking twice, but linger for ten minutes and you'll understand why locals are fond of it.

It's genuinely worth a detour if you're into railways or Victorian engineering, though you'll want to check beforehand whether anything special is running. The surrounding area has proper character - Oakham's market town centre is just a short walk away, with decent pubs and a castle worth poking around. Families with train-obsessed kids will get a kick out of watching the barriers come down, though it's hardly a full day's entertainment on its own.

From there you can easily explore Rutland's other attractions - the reservoir for water sports, walking trails, and the various small heritage sites dotted about. Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer crowds. Free to watch, obviously. No special facilities, just genuine East Midlands railway heritage.
