The entrance to Ogof Pyrgad is unassuming - just a gap in the hillside near Brecon where the landscape folds inward and swallows you whole. This is proper caving territory, not some polished show cave with electric lights and guided tours. You're crawling through passages that wind deep into the Powys bedrock, ducking under low stone ceilings and squeezing through sections that feel genuinely tight if you're not a natural contortionist.

What makes it worth the effort is the raw geology on display. Stalactites hang like stone icicles, flowstone ribbons cascade down the walls, and the whole place feels genuinely wild - because it is. This isn't a place for casual strollers; you need a decent torch, proper footwear, and a willingness to get muddy. Kids who love adventure and aren't claustrophobic will find it thrilling. Others might find themselves regretting it halfway through a squeeze.

It's free to enter, which seems almost criminal given what you're getting. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly without rushing. Summer's best, when the ground's drier and safer to navigate.
