Old Manor Farm

The earthworks here tell a story that most visitors to Huntingdon completely miss. Old Manor Farm, east of town, is an archaeological site where you can actually walk the lumps and bumps of what was once a significant settlement - Iron Age through to medieval times, depending on which bit you're looking at. It's not a manicured visitor centre with reconstructions and gift shops. It's raw: ditches, banks, and the ghost of human occupation impressed into the landscape.

For anyone with even a passing interest in how people lived before the modern world took over, it's genuinely worthwhile. Walkers benefit most - you need to get boots on the ground to read the site properly, and there's a decent walk to be had around the perimeter. History enthusiasts will spend a good hour picking out the different phases of settlement. Kids? Only if they're the type who enjoy a treasure hunt with invisible treasure - young children may find it hard to engage with bumps in a field.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - no café, no facilities, just the site itself. The best time to visit is late autumn or winter when the grass is shorter and the earthworks stand out more clearly. Summer hides everything under rank vegetation.

If you're staying at St Neots or Grafham Water caravan sites nearby, this makes a good half-day excursion to break up the holiday. It's less than five miles from either base, so easily manageable for a morning or afternoon out. Not spectacular, but honest archaeology.
