OPENSPACE | THE VAULT

The Vault is a contemporary art space tucked away in Grantown-on-Spey, and it's the sort of place that makes you reassess what you thought you'd find in the Highlands. Walking in, you're hit with clean white walls and work that actually makes you stop and think rather than shuffle past politely. It's small, which means you won't spend three hours here, but that's rather the point - it's focused, intentional, genuinely interesting.

The gallery does rotating exhibitions, so what's on depends entirely on when you visit. Some shows lean towards visual art, others experimental installations. It's proper contemporary - not the tweedy Highland art you might expect. The space itself is industrial-chic, which works surprisingly well against the granite surrounds of Grantown.

This is absolutely worth an hour if you're staying at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park (literally next door) and fancy something beyond the usual park activities. Art enthusiasts will find it genuinely worthwhile. Families with teenagers who can sit still might enjoy it; young kids will get restless fast. There's no café, so grab a coffee in town first.

Admission details aren't widely publicized, so ring ahead before you go - The Vault doesn't shout about itself, which is half its charm. It sits nicely alongside walking the Spey Valley if you're after a mixed break: outdoor stuff one day, gallery the next. Don't expect a big production. This is understated Highland culture, done well.
