The Oriel Davies Gallery sits in Caersws, a quiet corner of Powys where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find contemporary art. It's a proper surprise - a converted Victorian school building that now hosts rotating exhibitions of Welsh and international work. Inside, the spaces feel generous without being intimidating. High ceilings, good light, and enough breathing room between pieces that you're not crammed in with the crowds.

This is the place for anyone who wants to see what's happening in Welsh art without the trek to Cardiff. Visual artists, photographers, ceramicists - the programme shifts regularly, so there's always something different on the walls. It's also genuinely educational without being stuffy. The gallery takes time to contextualise work, and the staff know their stuff.

You'll need a good hour to properly look round, maybe longer if an exhibition really grabs you. It's free to visit, which is brilliant. From Caersws, it's dead easy to reach, making it a solid addition to a Mid Wales holiday rather than the main event. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Smithy Park, Love2Stay, or Maesmawr Farm Resort are all within five miles - you could easily pop in on a wet afternoon or between walks.

The village itself is small and doesn't offer much else in terms of attractions, but that's rather the point. Quiet gallery, quiet countryside, proper break from the usual tourist trail.
