Ossemsley Brake

Walking into Ossemsley Brake feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - dense, quiet, and genuinely undisturbed. This forest sits just outside Christchurch in Hampshire, and it's the sort of place locals have probably known about for years while visitors miss it entirely.

It's a proper old-growth wood with decent paths running through it. Expect tall trees, dappled light, and the kind of silence that makes you realise how rarely you get actual quiet anymore. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards - just woodland as it is. You walk it, you enjoy it, you leave.

Best for anyone after a proper woodland ramble without the crowds you'd get at the New Forest just over the border. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will find it worthwhile. Toddlers might struggle - the paths are fine but there's nothing to actually stop and look at every five minutes. Walkers heading out from nearby Hoburne Naish Holiday Park could easily tack this on to a morning or afternoon outing.

I'd allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how many detours you fancy. Spring's good when the woodland floor comes alive, but honestly any time you're in the area and want twenty minutes of proper forest, this does the job. It won't blow your mind, but that's rather the point. Sometimes you just need trees.
