Ox Carr Wood

Walk into Ox Carr Wood near Doncaster and you're straight into proper woodland - the kind where the path narrows and the canopy takes over. It's a modest forest by Yorkshire standards, but that's rather the point. No crowds, no visitor centre faffing about, just trees and the chance to actually hear yourself think.

The wood works best for families after a week of caravan life at Mooreacres or Bawtry - somewhere to stretch the legs without a big commitment. Walkers will appreciate the network of tracks that wind through, though it's not dramatically scenic in the way the Peak District gets all the attention. Kids tend to last a good hour or so before the novelty of "more trees" wears thin.

There's wildlife if you're patient: woodland birds, the odd fox if you're lucky. Spring brings bluebells that carpet the floor, which genuinely is worth timing a visit for if you can manage late April or early May. Bring wellies though - the undergrowth holds water even days after rain.

Free to wander, no gates, no admission charge that I'm aware of. Allow an hour for a proper poke around without rushing. It sits well within a broader South Yorkshire circuit - pop over to Doncaster for lunch, spend the afternoon here. Not a must-do, but if you're based at one of the local parks and want a break from the caravan without driving far, it does the job cleanly.
