Parc Cynog

The Afon Cynog doesn't look like much when you first spot it - a modest river carving through Carmarthenshire countryside near Carmarthen - but this nature reserve punches well above its weight. You get proper woodland walks alongside the water, where kingfishers actually show up if you're patient, and the whole thing feels genuinely wild without requiring a trek into the mountains.

It's the sort of place where birdwatchers and serious nature photographers spend half a day and still feel they've missed something. Families with young kids will manage an hour or so before the novelty of "looking at birds" wears thin, but anyone with binoculars and a bit of time should absolutely come. The river itself is the real draw - clear enough to spot fish, and the surrounding trees create proper cover for wildlife.

Access appears to be free, which is rare enough to mention. You're close to Pendine Sands if you fancy a seaside break alongside the nature watching, and all those holiday parks - Parkdean Resorts Pendine Sands, Nine Acres, Broadway, Thorning Farm - sit within easy reach. Worth combining with a coastal walk rather than treating as a standalone trip. Spring and early summer are best; winter can feel a bit bleak and muddy. Allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely into it, less if you're just passing through. Bring decent binoculars and patience in equal measure.
