Parc-Y-Cromlech

A Bronze Age burial chamber standing on a hillside just outside Aberystwyth, Parc-Y-Cromlech is one of those proper Welsh monuments that rewards a short detour if you're already in the area. The dolmen itself - a capstone balanced on upright stones - is modest by prehistoric standards, but there's something about standing next to a structure that's been here for four thousand years that makes the modern world feel rather small.

You'll need to find it yourself; there's no visitor centre or café. The approach involves a bit of scrambling through rough ground, which means most casual tourists miss it entirely. That's actually part of the appeal. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get genuine pleasure from this one - it's the sort of place that makes a morning ramble feel purposeful rather than aimless.

Allow 20 minutes if you're just photographing and standing about; longer if you're the contemplative sort. Admission is free, naturally. It works well as part of a broader walk around the Aberystwyth hills - you can combine it with other local routes without much faffing about.

If you're based at Silver Fern Glamping or Morfa Bychan just down the road, this fills a weather-dependent morning nicely. Don't expect facilities or crowds. Don't expect to be transported either. Just bring decent boots, a decent camera, and a basic interest in how people lived when Stonehenge was already ancient.
